A Brief Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis:
Cinematography: 3/5
Relatively good camera angles and a lot of the scenes were beautiful, but the type of camera they used just didn’t sit well with me. It felt flat (rather similar to Miami Vice actually) and rather unsettling in a negative way. There were some scenes that looked good with it, but they weren’t enough to convince me to give it another star.
Sound: 4/5
Not much to say here. One way to know if the sound is good is if you actually don’t notice anything wrong. And I didn’t notice anything wrong in this movie. Mostly. There was this one part that made me go “eh?” but that’s nitpicking.
Acting: 5/5
The acting was very good. It wasn’t all-round, but Johnny Depp more than made up for the shortcomings of the other actors. Depp made Dillinger live. There was character and there was depth. Christian Bale’s character was a little disappointing, given that it was essentially the same character as John Connor, which was the same character as Bruce Wayne. But that isn’t his fault: It’s the goddamned scriptwriters’. In all fairness, Bale made the most out of the cards (see what I did there?) he was dealt with. Perfect score.
Direction & Script: 4.5/5
This was also a shining point in the movie. Not a single scene felt boring. Do you know how hard it is to pull that off? The pacing was just brilliant, and the directing was top-notch. Throughout the movie I kept wondering “What will happen next?”
The only reason why I didn’t give it full marks was the poor treatment of Bale’s character.
Overall: 4.125/5
Bryan thinks of two things:
1. “Yey. I wanna see the movie now!”
2. “Oh so that’s what Johnny Depp looks like.”
’twas worth the $6 i spent on it.
Johnny Depp is synonymous to awesome. :P
I had loads of issues with the sound; the mixing/editing was terrible! Dialogue would go from soft to suddenly loud for no reason and back again all throughout the film. And the score was typical.
Acting was pretty good; like the rest of Michael Mann’s films, his asset is that he can bring the best out of his characters. The actual script was a little less than I hoped though. There were some definite pacing issues that I had with the film; my younger bro, for the second time in his life, fell asleep in a film.
I think that’s the fault of the theater. :))
I’m fairly sure it wasn’t; was in one of the higher end theaters
i love his movie Edwards Scissorhands, i think it is one of Johnny Depp’s best performance aside from Pirates of the Caribbean..,;
Johnny Depp is a handsome actor and he is great in acting too. this guy has really the talent to do great movies.`*”
