So my mother was at the supermarket earlier today and she bought beer among other things. The usual Pale Pilsen wasn’t available—the only thing on the shelves was Colt 45. She had never tried a 45 before, so she figured she might as well try. The cashier looked at my mom and surely out of concern for the frail-looking Japanese lady, said: “Ma’am, this is strong stuff.”

A while ago, during dinner, my mother decided to test out the 45. She poured some for me (only a little; I had to finish my lab report) and more for her, then she took a big gulp.

She said: “Weak.” And then downed the rest of her glass.

Hey, everyone. This is Philip, Levi’s good friend from way back in grade school. Levi has graciously given me this space ^[1] to plug our entry for Smart’s Mobile Developer Competition: Paranoia. Please do consider voting for us. Why?

Paranoia is an application for Google Android mobile phones that aims to assist in the tracking and retrieval of lost or stolen devices. Interested?

We provide tracking via GPS or Wi-Fi positioning, and Call/Text Activity Logging. This allows you to get the location of your phone, and see calls placed or texts made with it. How does it know?

You alert your phone either through our online web service, or through SMS text commands if you do not want to register with us. (We understand your paranoia too. ;)

A few hours ago, a friend of mine gave me a link to one of the most cringe-worthy designs I’ve ever had the misfortune of visiting. Hmm… I can’t help feeling that I’ve seen this sort of design somewhere.

It is with great pleasure that I present to you the second feature in the Bad Design series: Tuloy Pnoy.

Don’t get me wrong: this isn’t about Noynoy^[1]—this tirade is about whoever^[2] designed this website. Designers are hired for their creativity and thoughtfulness—the person who designed this website seems to have neither.

I’d write more, but I have an exam for which to study. So I’ll leave a list:

The marquee on the top-right of the page. That is so 1995.
The home button on the menu is the exact image taken from barackobama.com
I was under the impression that Noynoy’s campaign color was yellow. So why there more blue than yellow? Oh, wait. I forgot. It was ripped off from barackobama.com.
See the form on the right side of the page? The country default is “United States”. It should be “Philippines”.
What is that in the footer? A call center company? Why? Why not Powered by HOPE? If you were to copy from Obama’s site, it should be that.
Did I mention the logo?
This makes Noynoy look bad.

I pity the fool who designed tuloypnoy.com. Ugly websites, I can tolerate. Shameless copycats, I cannot. You are an embarrassment to the filipino design community and I encourage you to give up this job (which is obviously too big for you), and take knitting instead.

[1] For those of you who are unfamiliar with Philippine politics, Noynoy is the son of Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino and Corazon “Cory” Aquino. The former is a national hero (he was assassinated) and the man on the 500 peso bill, while the latter succeeded Marcos after he was ousted by the monumental People Power rally on highway 54, known today as EDSA.

[2] Apparently, this is a “fan”-made website, and isn’t the official campaign website of Noynoy. The fact remains, however, that whoever designed this committed a very dishonorable act. The original text of my error is as follows:

“While I have nothing against Noynoy, I must say that he must reconsider his choice of publicity personnel. Designers are hired for their creativity and thoughtfulness. The person who designed this website has neither.”

New Server, Lost Post

I’m happy to announce that we have migrated to a more reliable server. That means less downtime. This has, however, come at a cost: my most recent post before this announcement, “How to Win My Vote” wasn’t backed up, largely due to my lack of foresight, and so it is lost in the sea of the interwebs. Philip will try to retrieve it once he finishes migrating the rest of the sites, but there are no guarantees, and I’m too lazy to write it again.

I promise to make up for it with more interesting posts/essays.

In Germany they came first for the Communists, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist. Then they came for the Jews and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Catholics and I didn’t speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time, there was no-one left to speak up.
